Cape Town ready to host 2024’s penultimate National Extreme Festival battles

Saturday, 21 September, will see Killarney International Raceway, situated in Cape Town’s western suburb of Table View, host the penultimate National Extreme Festival event of 2024.

Apart from the SunBet ZX10 Masters Cup and Extreme SuperCars Driven by Dunlop, this will be the sixth round of the championship.

SunBet ZX10 Masters Cup

The race day programme will commence with the SunBet ZX10 Masters Cup. Unlike the four-wheel series on the programme, there has not been a long break for the two-wheel brigade due to a double-header round as part of the Festival of Motoring at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.

Clinton Seller (King Price Extreme) remains unbeaten from his starts heading into Round 9 of the all-Kawasaki ZX10 series. He holds a commanding lead of 119 points over his nearest rival, Trevor Westman (Team Wayward Powered by Project Sixty SA). The latter will look to turn things around in front of his home crowd. Damion Purificati has slotted into the top three and has a race win to his name after taking a victory in Gqeberha in Seller’s absence. The other rider to take a win on that day was David Enticott (Motorwise), who, like Westman, will look to impress in front of his home crowd. At the time of writing, Seller is the only one of the top riders not to appear on the entry list.

Seller, Westman, and Purificati also head up Class A. Current champion Graeme van Breda (Stefanutti Stocks) is at the top of Class B. He will be challenged by David Veringa and Dieter Huysamen (Trucella Angling Supplies). The Class C battle sees Johan Le Roux (Avidan Trading) at the top, with Jayson Lamb (Tyremart) and Joao Cruz as closest rivals.

Investchem Formula 1600

In the Investchem Formula 1600 Championship, KC Ensor-Smith (Investchem) holds a nine-point lead over Jagger Robertson (Liqui Moly). Last time in Cape Town, the wins were shared between Shrien Naidoo (Production X) and Jason Coetzee (Mint Wrapworks). Coetzee, who missed the fifth round in East London, retained third place on the points table. That day, Siyabonga Mankonkwana (Investchem) took his first win of the season, and he wants to continue the momentum.

Astron Energy Polo Cup

Jason Loosemore (Security Fencing and Alarms) has a 35-point lead in the Astron Energy Polo Cup. After his double win in East London, Ethan Coetzee (Slayer Energy) moved into second place in the all-Volkswagen Polo GTI series, with former leader Capetonian Nathan Victor now third, four points adrift. Another driver to watch out for will be Cape Town’s Kyle Visser (Volkswagen Motorsport), the reigning Volkswagen Rookie Cup champion.

In the Masters Class, Wayne Masters (AlphaESS) has an 18-point lead over Derick Smalberger (Sabertek). However, while this pair occupies the top two spots on the points table, third-placed John Kruger (Habot Oil) took the honours in both races in the season opener.

Unlike the other series on the roster, the Astron Energy Polo Cup will have three heats on the day.

GR Cup Driven by Netstar

The GR Cup Driven by Netstar will again provide entertainment around the circuit with three Toyota model-based classes.

In the GR 86 Class, Dawie van der Merwe started and won every race this season, the only driver on the entire tour to hold this record. While he is well in the clear at the top, the second-place battle is between Niko Zafiris and Dylan Pragji, with only nine points between them.

In the GR Corolla Class, Sean Nurse has won all but the last race and has a 19-point advantage over Alex Shahini, who is 14 points clear of Hannes Visser.

Devin Scott (GR Driving Academy) has a two-point lead in the GR Yaris Class over Mario de Sousa (MOTUS Toyota). Paul de Vos is 12 points adrift.

Extreme SuperCars Driven by Dunlop

It will be a high-speed battle in Round 7 of the Extreme SuperCars Driven by Dunlop Championship. Arnold Neveling (Bobcat Powered by GOSCOR Lift Trucks Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO) has a three-point lead over Jonathan du Toit (Trans Africa Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO), while Stuart White (Into Africa Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3).

Du Toit heads up the GT3 Class, while White is topping Class A+. Ant Blunden (McLaren MP4), and Jimmy Giannoccaro (G&H Transport Audi R8) head up Classes B and C, respectively.

The weekend will see the return of Franco Scribante (Porsche 997) to the grid. The previous Cape Town visit saw Scribante and White delivering three highly-entertaining battles. A host of Cape Town-based drivers will also join the grid, including Dawie Joubert (Wildrose Gin Lotus Exige), Imaad Modack (M.I.M Carriers Porsche GT2R), Marco Retter (Progress Precision Engineering BMW E46 Turbo), Mike Verrier (NDT Racing BMW Z4), and Renzo Torrente (ATM Chiptuning BMW M4 GT4).

South African Touring Cars

Robert Wolk (Chemical Logistics BMW 128 ti) holds a 25-point lead over Michael van Rooyen (Toyota Gazoo Racing Corolla) in the South African Touring Cars Championship. The latter moved up to second place in the previous outing, with Capetonian Julian van der Watt (Chemical Logistics Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI) making it one driver per manufacturer in the top three. However, Toyota leads BMW and Volkswagen in the Manufacturers’ championship. The season opener saw Wolk and defending champion Saood Variawa (Toyota Gazoo Racing Corolla) share the wins.

SATC SupaCup

A series of hearings after the previous outing sees Keegan Campos (Campos Transport Polo SupaCup) now five points clear of Jonathan Mogotsi (Volkswagen Motorsport Polo SupaCup) in the SATC SupaCup. Charl Visser (Volkswagen Motorsport Polo SupaCup) still occupies third place, 31 points adrift. Exclusions for Cape Town’s Tate Bishop (ANGRi Racing Polo SupaCup) saw him drop two places, which elevated Brad Liebenberg (Sparco Toyota Starlet) to fourth, seeing him as the highest-placed Toyota entrant. The previous outing in Cape Town saw Visser win from his first start before Mogotsi won Race 2.

Saturday’s race programme will commence at 10:20. Spectator tickets can be purchased beforehand via Webtickets, or at the Killarney International Raceway entrance gate on Saturday. The full race day programme will also be broadcast live on the Extreme Festival website.

Round 7 of the National Extreme Festival is proudly hosted by the Western Province Motor Club, in association with Smile 90.4 FM.
