National championship battles to continue at The Bay

Extreme Festival Presented By Coca-Cola at Aldo Scribante Raceway

Gqeberha will see the 2025 Extreme Festival Presented By Coca-Cola national championship battles return to the coast this coming weekend (9-10 May) at the Aldo Scribante Raceway.

The weekend will see two series that missed the double-header event at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit return to the programme. This will be the first outing for both the SunBet ZX10 Masters Cup and Volkswagen Rookie Cup since the season opener in Cape Town.

Volkswagen Rookie Cup

The Volkswagen Rookie Cup will start Saturday’s race day programme. Giovanni Florotto holds a one-point lead in the all-Volkswagen Polo Vivo GT series over Uzair Khan, one of the two drivers who shared the Round 1 wins. Mauro Da Luz, in third place, took the second win. Christopher Tait and Luke Hill were the other drivers to feature prominently in the season opener’s results.

While all drivers in the series have varying levels of circuit experience, the Aldo Scribate Raceway, the de facto home of Volkswagen in South Africa, will see the playing field levelled to a degree, with all drivers in the series having completed a significant amount of pre-season testing at the venue.

SunBet ZX10 Masters Cup

The all-Kawasaki ZX10 motorcycle SunBet ZX10 Masters Cup sees the defending champion, Clinton Seller (King Price Xtreme), on top of the points table with two wins. Seller also leads the Class A. Second-placed Graeme van Breda (Stefanutli Stocks) heads up the Class B, while third-placed Jayson Lamb (Tyremart EL) leads the Class C battle.

The series sees riders compete in a combined field and different classes. Seller’s Class A rivals are set to include Adriaan van Dalen (VAG Automotive Centre) and Pieter Delport (Carlin Alademie). Van Breda will face challenges from, amongst others, James Barson (Steelmonkey Clothing). Johan le Roux (Avidan Trading) and Lionel Black will be some riders looking to challenge Lamb in Class C.

Two other riders to watch out for, both in Class A, will be Damian Purificati (Amalgum Welding Shop) and David Enticott (Ravenol South Africa). With Seller missing the previous Gqeberha outing, this pair shared the race wins.

Astron Energy Polo Cup

The Astron Energy Polo Cup is always set to entertain. Ethan Coetzee (Ethan Coetzee Motorsport) has a one-point lead over Mohammed Karodia (Fast 5 Motorsport) in the all-Volkswagen Polo GTI series. Coetzee started the season with his sole win thus far in 2025, while Karodia won two races, including the most recent outing. Tyler Robinson (AF Fans) became only the second female winner in the series at Kyalami and currently occupies third place.

Apart from the season’s first race, it has been all about Wayne Masters (Performance Masters) in the Series’ Masters Class. This sees the defending champion 14 points clear of John Kruger (Habot Lubricants), the other driver to have topped a podium in 2025. However, podium-regular Derick Smalberger (Sabertek) will look to channel his 2024 form at the circuit that saw him share the day’s wins with Masters.

Gazoo Racing Cup Driven By Netstar

The Gazoo Racing Cup Driven By Netstar delivered some of Kyalami’s best action, and the drivers competing in the three separate-scored classes will aim to build on this form.

Jason Coetzee heads up the GR 86 Class with three wins from four starts in his debut season. Eight points adrift is Kent Swartz, who took his maiden victory in Kyalami’s first of two races. Khanya Ngwennya occupies third place.

The GR Corolla Class sees Mario de Sousa, the only driver to have competed in both 2025 rounds, on top, 10 points clear of Devon Scott, who will not be competing in Gqeberha. This will see Paul de Vos, who finished second to De Sousa twice at Kyalami, as the latter’s top rival.

Nabil Abdool, who heads up the GR Yaris Class from Kyle Kock by eight points, will be a driver to watch for. In his debut season, Abdool holds a 100% start-to-win record in 2025. Phuti Mpyane occupies third place.

South African Touring Cars

One of the biggest drawcards in local motorsport is the South African Touring Cars (SATC) Championship. Heading into the weekend, the most experienced driver in the field, Michael van Rooyen (SVR Steelworks Toyota Corolla), heads up 2025 debutant Jagger Robertson (Sparco Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI) by four points. Another driver to watch out for will be Keegan Campos, the former SATC SupaCup frontrunner who made his SATC debut at Kyalami and concluded his day with a win in his Campos Trucking BMW 128ti).

SATC SupaCup

The SATC SupaCup sees one of 2024’s Gqeberha winners, Tate Bishop (ANGRI Volkswagen Polo Supacup), holding a 14-point lead over defending champion Jonathan Mogotsi (Volkswagen Motorsport Polo SupaCup). Bishop also won the first three races this year, with Mogotsi taking the most recent win. The other driver to win in Gqeberha in 2024, Charl Visser (Charl Engineering Volkswagen Polo SupaCup), is third.

The full event programme will be available on the Extreme Festival Presented By Coca-Cola website closer to the start of the weekend. All relevant spectator information can also be accessed via the Extreme Festival Links page

Spectator tickets will be available from the Aldo Scribante Raceway entrance gate at R100 per adult, and children under 12 will get in for free. Saturday’s full race day will be broadcast live on the Extreme Festival website.
