Return to Cape Town for Extreme Festival Presented By Coca-Cola’s national title battles

Killarney International Raceway is ready for its second Extreme Festival Presented By Coca-Cola of 2025

Cape Town’s Killarney International Raceway is set to host 2025’s penultimate Extreme Festival Presented By Coca-Cola for the national roster of the Tour this coming weekend (12-13 September, as the various battles for championship honours heat up.

This, the first of the two return trips for the national-status series, will also be the final coastal visit for the year, and the first national outing featuring all series on the roster since June’s visit to Zwartkops Raceway.

Starting the action-paced race day programme on Saturday will be the fourth round of the Extreme SuperCars Driven By Dunlop, with their previous round being the above-mentioned Zwartkops Raceway outing.

While Kris Budnik took the lead in the championship, he will not be in Cape Town. This will see the likes of Jonathan du Toit (Trans Africa Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO), Ant Blunden (G&H Racing), and Marius Jackson (MJR Motorsport Audi R8 LMS GT3) looking to reel him in. While the drivers will compete on a combined grid, they will be competing in various classes.

The GT3 Class will see Du Toit compete against Charl Arnagies (Stradale Motorsport Mercedes AMG GT3 EVO) and Gianni Giannoccaro (Sparco Nissan GTR)

In the time-based classes, Jackson will be one of the frontrunners in Class A. He’ll be up against Ricky Giannoccaro (G&H Transport Lamborghini Huracan GT3) and Cape Town debutant in the series, Charl Visser (Charl Engineering Porsche GT3 4L). The latter having previously competed in the SATC SupaCup. Blunden, in Class B, is yet to announce the car he will compete in on the weekend, but his direct competition will be Mark du Toit (Trans Africa Racing Ford GT). Jimmy Giannoccaro (G&H Transport Audi R8 GT4) will start the weekend in Class C.

A host of local drivers have entered Class D, although they could move up to the quicker classes depending on their laptimes. Some of the well-known names are Weylin Volschenk (IMC-SA Porsche 997.1 Cup), Mike Verrier (NDT Racing BMW Z4M), and Marcel Angel (Autohaus Angel Ferrari GT3 3.9L).

The Extreme SuperCars Driven By Dunlop will also be one of two series to have three races on the day, with the second being the Astron Energy Polo Cup.

Heading into the weekend’s sixth round, Mohammed Karodia (Lee Thompson Racing) has a 10-point lead over Rory Atkinson (Industry Petroleum) in the all-Volkswagen Polo GTI series. While there are 28 points between the leaders and the battle for third place between Judd Bertholdt (Volkswagen Rookie Cup), Hannes Scheepers (Dainfern Dental Studio), and Ethan Coetzee (Ethan Coetzee Racing), things can easily change after three races, with 20 points available per race win. The season opener saw Koradia, Atkinson, and Coetzee share the wins. To date, both Karodia and Atikinson have racked up four wins each. Brad Liebenberg, the most recent winner, will not be in action; however, Tyler Robinson (AF Fans) will also look to add to her sole win in 2025.

Astron Energy Polo Cup

In the Masters Class, it is the defending champion Wayne Masters (Performance Masters) who will enter the weekend on top, with a 36-point advantage. Masters has won nine of this year’s 11 races, including two of the previous Cape Town races. John Kruger, with two wins, including the other Cape Town race, is second, six points clear of Derick Smalberger (Sabertek).

The Volkswagen Rookie Cup will also return to the programme for the first time since June. However, they have had another round as part of a recent Algoa Motorsport Club race day. This weekend will mark their fifth round of the 2025 championship.

Volkswagen Rookie Cup

Josh Moore has a three-point advantage in the all Volkswagen Polo Vivo GT series over Christopher Tait. 13 Points adrift is Mauro da Luz, who has a three-point advantage over Uzair Khan. The latter pair of drivers shared the wins in the previous outing. Moore and Tait are tied on three wins each from the nine races this year.

Michael van Rooyen (Toyota Gazoo Racing Corolla) heads up the South African Touring Cars Championship heading into Round 6. His consistency in 2025, along with his two race wins, sees him 23 points clear of local Cape Town’s Chemical Logistics Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI ace, Julian van der Watt. The latter took his first win of the season in the most recent outing. Jagger Robertson (76 Legacy Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI), in third, is the highest-ranked rookie heading into the weekend and still in search of his first win. He trails Van der Watt by two points.

South African Touring Cars

The season opener saw Anthony Pretorius dominate. Since then, he moved on to forge a successful career in Europe, which sees the BMW 128ti now branded in the Campos Racing colours and piloted by Keegan Campos. The former SATC SupaCup frontrunner has made a significant impact since joining the grid in Round 2, with three wins already under his belt, and he trails Robertson by only six points.

Behind them will be the SATC SupaCup, a series that could hold something very significant for the local Cape Town fans to celebrate in Round 6 this weekend.

With seven wins from 10 starts, including the previous two Cape Town races, Tate Bishop (ANGRi Racing Volkswagen Polo SupaCup) finds himself 59 points clear of his nearest rival, defending champion Jonathan Mogotsi (Volkswagen Genuine Parts Polo SupaCup). Mogotsi has three wins, with four races remaining. Should Bishop finish the weekend with a lead of 44 points, he will take the title on home soil, making it the first national title clinched by a Capetonian in Cape Town since the 2013 season, when Kosie Weyers did the same in the Polo Cup.

SATC SupaCup

Visser’s move to the Extreme SuperCars Driven By Dunlop series means it’s quite a long gap to the next driver. While Visser is only 16 points behind Mogotsi, fourth-placed Dawie van der Merwe (Toyota Gazoo Racing Starlet SupaCup) is 37 points adrift.

It has been a busy month for the SunBet ZX10 Masters Cup. The all-Kawasaki ZX10 brigade had a double-header round at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit just two weeks prior as part of the 2025 Festival Of Motoring Powered By Wesbank. This saw Clint Seller (King Price Xtreme), in Class A, continue his 100% start-to-win ratio, and extend his points lead to 143 over Class B’s Greame van Breda (Stefanutti Stocks), with Class A’s Damion Purificati (Amalgum Welding Shop) a further six points adrift.

SunBet ZX10 Masters Cup

However, Seller will not make the trip to Cape Town for Round 7, which means we will see a different rider on the top step of the Class A podium this weekend. Purificati will be one of the contenders to do so, but Cape Town’s David Enticott (Ravenol SA) cannot be discounted at home. A surprise may well be sprung by Trevor Westman (Project Sixty SA). An accident in 2024’s corresponding event saw him sidelined for an extended period. However, this would not be the first time that the Capetonian would bounce back victoriously after an injury.

In Class B, Van Breda also boasts a 100% win record, and direct rivals will include Reginald Seale (HXCS) and Dieter Huysamen(Adventrue Xtreme). Class C’s Jason Lamb (Tyremart) has a 100% win record in the races he started, but missed the recent double-header. There, the wins were shared two apiece between second-placed Johan le Roux and fourth-placed Brian Bontekoning. Bontekoning will also miss the Killarney International Raceway trip, with Joao Cruz, third, eager to take a step to the top after finishing as runner-up in all four Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit races.

The weekend will be the first Cape Town outing for the Investchem MSA4 Championship. The new cars were still in production at the time of the Tour’s national season opener, and this will be the third round for the series.

Investchem MSA4

KC Ensor-Smith (Investchem) leads the championship going into the weekend, with four of this year’s five races having seen him win. He holds a 15-point advantage over Mikel Bezuidenhout (Corsa Dei Gemelli), the other 2025 race winner. Shrien Naidoo (Production X) occupies third place.

They will also be joined on the grid by the Formula Ford Kent field. This entry list will include Ian Schofield (Investchem/Chemical Mygale Sj), Allen Meyer (Investchem Van Diemen RF2007), Rick Morris (Investchem Mygale Sj), and Alex Vos (DV Building Supplies Van Diemen RF04).

The GR Cup Driven By Netstar’s sixth round could also see Capetonians celebrate a potential championship win in their backyard, albeit with this title being on National Challenge level.

Cape Town’s Jason Coetzee is on the verge of clinching the title and leads Kent Swarz in the GR 86 Class by 23 points, with only 28 points still on offer. Coetzee has taken all but one of the wins this year, including the two previous Cape Town races. Swartz, the other driver who won a race, is one point clear of Mbuso Ngwenya.

GR Cup Driven By Netstar

The GR Corolla Class sees Mario de Sousa 18 points clear of Devon Scott. Potentially, this title can also be wrapped up on the weekend, but here the momentum is firmly with the challenger. De Sousa has four wins to his name, but has played second fiddle to Scott in all five races that the latter competed in, which includes the first two races this year in Cape Town. Werner Venter is third.

The GR Yaris Class sees 2025 debutant Nabil Abdool in a similar position to that of Coetzee, leading by 23 points and with a 100% win record. Phuti Mpyane is second, with Capetonian Kyle Kock two points behind in third.
